" Get more info on the Smartcar http://www.myride.com/vehicle-... In recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car for sale in the US market, earned the top rating of good for front and side crash protection. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of acceptable for protection against whiplash in rear impacts. Smart Fortwo is classified a microcar, meaning it's smaller even than minicars. Weighing about 1,800 pounds, the Smart is more than 3 feet shorter and almost 700 pounds lighter than a Mini Cooper. Its impressive when it hits a solid object because its so light - when it hits another moving object because it has such a light mass it becomes a death trap - check out the crash test vid of the Q7 and the fiat 500 on youtube - this highlights the problem! small cars come out well in crash tests because they are so light - in reality when crashed into a normal car, they are deathtraps.

Personally I feel that crash tests, though all well and good, forget something key - namely, why you get in the accident in the first place and how the car behaves prior to impact. A light car like the Smart ForTwo can stop amazingly quickly in comparison to a bigger car - imagine the momentum of the electric motors and batteries in a Prius, for example, ploughing on ahead while the brakes struggle. All I can say is that I feel 100% safe in mine.

There's an interesting crash test done by Fifth Gear (it's available on youtube) which was done on the previous fortwo and the smart coped surprisingly well with a 70mph crash into a solid concrete barrier. The safety cell of the smart is extraordinarily strong.

It's rear engined and rear wheel drive.

And most cars like 10 years old are discontinued or parts are disconstinued. Most likely die with a small car like that without lowered speed limits.

imagine getting hit in the front and back by pick up trucks. *death*most likely
